Troy Gas Holder

Years ago, these were common buildings. Before natural gas was pumped from wells, gas was produced from Coal. This gas was then distributed to houses nearby. The gas was pumped in to a gas holder, a large round building, with a cast iron liner in it. The liner rose a fell depending on the amount of gas in the system, producing the pressure for distribution. Today few remain, and the one in Troy is one of the best known examples. Now owned by Sage Brothers Painting, it is used for storage. In recent years it has hosted art shows and performances as well. Thank you to Bill Sage for allowing me in to photograph the building.
